Insurance Hike For Mobile Phone Offenders

You are driving down the motorway and your mobile phone rings, what do you do? Do you answer the call and run the risk of being caught or do you leave it and return the call when you have got to your destination? Recent research has shown that 56% of motorists see another motorist using their mobile phone whilst driving every day.

Many people are not deterred from answering their mobile phones whilst driving, by a fine and points on their driving license, but something that may make people start to pay more attention to the law is that Allianz (one of the largest general insurers in the UK) will be raising car insurance premiums by up to 30% for drivers who have been caught using their mobile phone whilst driving.

Previously offenders had their premiums increased the same amount as speeding offenders had their premiums increased. Allianz's takes the needless act of mobile phone offences and there dangers so seriously that they will be boosting offenders premiums by an extra 30%. Offenders will not only have a fine and points on their license but also the financial burden of higher car insurance premiums.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before other insurance companies follow suit, so next time your mobile phone rings when you are driving think twice before answering it, you won't just be breaking the law you will be breaking the bank as well! Why not invest in a Bluetooth headset or car kit if you need to answer calls whilst driving, that way you can answer calls legally and stay safe.
